DOD Names 2020 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Awardees

The Department of Defense (DOD) has awarded National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships for 2020 to 162 exceptionally-qualified awardees from 57 institutions nationwide.

The Fellowship term begins in September 2020, and fellowships focus on research topics relevant to DOD interests. Each NDSEG Fellowship lasts for three years and pays for full tuition and all mandatory fees; a monthly stipend; provides a travel budget over the Fellow’s tenure for professional development; and provides annual health insurance funding. Our objective through the NDSEG Fellowship and its mentorship program initiatives is to propel talented individuals to the forefront of discovery and innovation relevant to the DOD, promote the growth of scientists and engineers within relevant DOD research disciplines, and support current and future DOD science, engineering, and technology innovations.

The DOD NDSEG Fellowship Program, established in 1989 by direction of Congress and sponsored by the Army, Navy, and Air Force, serves as a means of increasing the number of United States citizens trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance. This program encourages baccalaureate recipients to enter graduate school and ultimately gain doctorates which align to the DOD Broad Agency Announcements in research and development.

Since program inception, DOD has awarded more than 4,000 fellowships and received more than 60,000 applications. DOD plans to award new three-year graduate fellowships each fiscal year (subject to the availability of funds) to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.
