Defense Innovators Unite: OASD(MC) Sparks Game-Changing Tech Talks with Industry
NEWS RELEASE: June 11, 2025
On June 6, 2025, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (APL) buzzed with energy as over 270 defense industry trailblazers—think big names and scrappy tech startups—joined forces with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Mission Capabilities (OASD(MC)).
This wasn’t your typical government meeting. It was a full-throttle, day-long dive into the future of warfare, hosted by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E)), the DoD’s tech mastermind pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI), hypersonics, quantum computing, and more.
Picture this: top experts sharing insider briefings on the toughest threats facing the U.S., from China’s hypersonic advances to cyber warfare risks. They didn’t just talk problems—they laid out bold plans for experiments and mission-critical tech that could tip the scales for our warfighters. The room crackled with ideas as industry reps learned about partnerships, funding opportunities, and how to plug into OUSD(R&E)’s $17.2 billion science and technology (S&T) budget. From the S&T Office’s groundbreaking research to the Critical Technologies Office’s push to get cutting-edge systems into the field, it was all about turning big ideas into battlefield reality.
The real magic happened in over 60 tailored breakout sessions, where DoD leaders and industry innovators rolled up their sleeves to tackle specific challenges—like building smarter drones or next-gen missile defenses like the Golden Dome. These weren’t stuffy lectures; they were candid, two-way conversations that sparked 75 follow-up meetings for deeper dives. It’s exactly the kind of collaboration Under Secretary Emil Michael is championing, bringing private-sector hustle to supercharge DoD innovation.
Dan Ermer, OASD(MC)’s Director for Rapid Prototyping and Experimentation, captured the vibe perfectly: “We can continue forming relationships, building rapport and developing mutual understanding holding more frequent engagements,” he said. “Tailored briefings and private break-out discussions allow us to get to the heart of the gaps and challenges we need industry support on to develop technologies that will allow warfighters to gain peace through strength and dominate the battlefield.”
Ermer’s got big plans to keep the momentum going. OASD(MC) will host these industry pow-wows twice a year, plus regular virtual meetups to keep the ideas flowing. Want in? Check out upcoming events on OUSD(R&E)’s website or LinkedIn. Whether you’re a small business dreaming big or a defense giant, there’s a seat at the table—especially with OUSD(R&E)’s S&T Office backing startups through programs like the Office of Strategic Capital’s $984 million loan initiative and the Accelerate the Procurement and Fielding of Innovative Technology’s $400 million program targeting non-traditional businesses.
This June 6 event was a slam dunk for OUSD(R&E)’s mission to unite brilliant minds and deliver tech that keeps America safe. With APL’s brainpower in the mix—fresh off a $3 billion Missile Defense Agency contract and AI fighter jet breakthroughs—it’s clear the DoD’s innovation engine is firing on all cylinders. From hypersonic sensors to cyber shields, these partnerships are building a future where our warfighters don’t just compete—they dominate, securing peace through strength in a world that’s heating up fast.
